Robots and Rocketships: Lirany Vasquez’s Pretty Little Thing
Pretty Little Thing is a whimsical and playful jewelry line inspired by the beauty and energy of New York City, according to designer, Lirany Vasquez. The collection includes charm pieces such as cleavers, robots, and spaceships; edgy pieces like the Spine Choker which looks just like vertebrae in dark rhodium metal, and sexier pieces like the hand-woven Suede and Filigree Earrings and the unusual Sunburst Necklace. Pretty Little Thing began in 2004 as a hobby for the designer, and quickly grew into a business as hip downtown boutiques such as Charlotte Ronson and uptown establishments such as Henri Bendel took notice and started placing orders. The line has been featured in Nylon, InStyle, Teen Vogue, and Lucky as well as The New York Times and Daily Candy.
Culture Clash: Jalea Jalea Makes a Statement
Tatiana Sánchez, a native of Monterrey, Mexico, is the creator behind the Jalea Jalea line of accessories, which combine traditional craftsmanship techniques with modern technology. Sánchez uses a combination of recycled and native materials to express and explore her take on design in the social context around her. The result: playful jewelry such as the colorful Candy line and the delicate golden pieces in the Little Kingdoms collection. Sánchez also reworks found pieces to create one-of-a-kind designs. Sánchez says she is inspired by the clash of social classes and culture in Mexico, the possibilities inherent in materials, decorative techniques and color.
NICE Clothing: Tees with Tenacity
Steven Day is a New York based artist and a designer from Newport Beach, California, who started NICE Clothing in 2002 after moving to Manhattan. Day's first altered and graphic text-based work was screen-printed T-shirts commissioned by a stylist for a rock show in Dublin, Ireland. The success of these pieces prompted him to approach stores in New York and Los Angeles, and soon his thought-provoking tees and dresses were in stores from coast to coast. Day’s imagery is based on photographs (both his and found), along with references to popular culture, film, and music. One tee features the washed out, almost ghostly image of a young Barbara Streisand in the early 1960s. Soon to hit the stores is NICE's new line of T's for men and women inspired by vanishing 1960's signage of the Amusements parks in Coney Island.
West/Feren Bags: For the Discerning Tastemaker
West/Feren designer Alison Pawling has put her personal stamp on the accessory world with the defiant mix of bold color and tailored military detailing found in each of her bag designs. Released in the Fall of 2008, West/Feren’s signature bags have already garnered attention from celebrities and the media. Her bags have appeared on the arm of Gossip Girl’s Jess Szohr as well as on The Today Show’s Splurge/Steal segment. Celebrities, media outlets and influential boutiques have all recognized the designer’s unique and wearable vision. Alison handpicks and imports leather and fabric from all over the world and has her bags handcrafted in New York City. In an era of mass production, West/Feren’s meticulous designs and quality craftsmanship are a tribute to the past, and we hope a taste of what the future of fashion holds.
