Black - The New Red

Remember when black nail polish was all the rage last year? This year the vampy color has shifted from the touch of death to the kiss of death by moving onto the lips. Black lipstick was all over the Autumn/Winter '08 runways in New York, Paris, and London, as designers from ZAC POSEN to GILES DEACON played with the look. It’s not an easy trend to pull off, but when done correctly and with a sophisticated touch, it's instantly modern, slightly moody and sartorially dramatic.

Some stars couldn't wait to experiment with the corpsely color. RACHEL MCADAMS showed her gothic pout for the cover of the New York Times fall issue of T Style Magazine and pop singer LILY ALLEN pulled off the look ringside at the LUELLA show. The Yves Saint Laurent show showcased STEFANO PILATI'S designs, as well as the popular dark lip. The models' heavy jet-black fringe provided the perfect frame for their onyx pouts. YSL Beauté’s limited edition Pur BLACK Gloss is available through pre-order. The inky formula is transparent enough to be layered to your perfect shade --- from a rich plum to the onyx.

Last fall, designer TARA SUBKOFF was ahead of the curve by sending her models down the Imitation of Christ runway with Smashbox Cosmetic’s sheer grape lipstick in “Enchanting.” She called the show a “goth princess ballerina look.” Women's Wear Daily reports that makeup artists in London used cosmetic powerhouse MAC's Chroma Cake topped with Lip Glass to get the models' deathly hue.

Lancome is also on par with the trend and has launched their own version of a black lipgloss called Piha Black. It's been such a hit that there is a waiting list at Bloomingdales! If you are a bit unsure about donning the deathly hue, MAC has also officially released their Cult of Cherry line, which has a softer cherries and chocolate color scheme, but is still bold, rich and will make you the instant femme fetale; perfect for Fall.

Black lipstick is a fresh change from the classic red, although it probably makes kissing a bit of a messy affair!
